I like the idea and it's a decent start for a first project, but it could definitely use some polish both on the text and the code. Some interface issues right off the bat - the nav/character pane is on top of the left half of the main text, not to the side. It looks like the overlap goes away in full screen mode, but comes back if switching back to windowed. Also, the Return button on the stat screen throws an error.
Minor suggestion: maybe assign "Velma" as the default value of the $name variable, so that the player isn't seeing "$name" before getting to the name prompt?
BTW, Grant is mentioned as "one of your stepbrothers", but there are no others in the family photo. Is that intentional?
I think I might actually have to reconstruct it from the beginning to make it cleaner and function better. The coding is, as you mentioned, super effy. Thanks for the suggestion. You're right, I can fix that :)
Yes, that was intentional. The second stepbrother is/was supposed to be more standoffish and aloof.. The stepbrothers, in general, are older than the protagonist. The elder one of the two doesn't per say fuck with his fathers new family. So that's why he's not in the family photo.
(Is this a spoiler? Eh, not really.. as of right now. It's more so set dressing. He's not supposed to show up for a while, to be honest.)

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Just pretend this isn't here until I figure out how to either upload correctly or update Chapter 1
Edit: I still have no idea what I'm doing but I fixed it so you can at least scroll now. The pictures aren't showing up for some reason but it's cool cause Imma fix that.

Not too bad so far. Pics are broken for sure, but for a first test you're doing pretty good.
